She brought the entire English Department faculty to MSU for genevx summer training institute, and for several years, she periodically traveled to “Bop” to meet with and conduct workshops for the teachers in the program. Documenting her insights with quotes from notable Black historical, literary and popular figures, Smitherman makes clear that Black English is as legitimate a form of speech as British, American, or Australian English.
